Where to go for child custody help in Texas?
Bob J asked:
Any idea where I could find a decent child custody attorney or information on custody battles in the Houston, Texas area?

go to your domestic relations office. they will set up child support and can do a visitation schedule and custody. been there done that i would advise u to take an attorney though they can be down right rude there.
Start with the attorney general’s office, they can guide you and let you know all the steps to take in custody cases.
Hi,
Call the courthouse in your county and ask them if they have a family law help center. If so, that center can give you an overview of the process.
If your case has already been assigned to a court, you may want to spend a day sitting in on child custody proceedings.
It will serve two purposes:
1. It will help reduce the mystery (and a little bit of stress) as to what goes on in court.
2. Keep your eye out for particularly impressive attorneys. These are the ones that strongly advocate for their clients, push the judge to the brink of annoyance (but doesn’t cross the line), and don’t get caught unprepared or off-guard. After their hearing is over, follow them out into the hallway and ask them for their card.
That way, you see them in action.
Also, while considering which attorney to hire, check with your state bar to see if they have any disciplinary actions against them. Some state bar websites let you check this online.
If you have a “battle” on your hands, you definitely want a skilled litigator who knows child custody strategies and the local players (judges, evaluators, and other attorneys). That’s generally someone who has been practicing at least 10 years in your county.
Good luck.
